Annie Lobert Saving Women from Sex Trafficking

n Las Vegas, a dynamic, smart and beautiful woman is sharing her unbelievable story of faith, courage and survival. Annie Lobert was a victim of sex trafficking for sixteen years. She described what her life was like during that time: “I was locked in a house that was covered with bars for several years, forced to go on calls for the escort service where I was followed and watched by my trafficker. I knew any attempt to escape would end with serious punishment.” Her book, Fallen, takes the reader into a frightening world of sex trafficking, coercion and danger. Annie’s story serves as a reminder of the underworld that thrives on young victims.

Annie shares openly about her life as a trafficked woman calling it “modern-day slavery,” She explains, “traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims then force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation.”

Many find it hard to believe that women living in our community are exploited by pimps who control their every move. People would assume that Annie wasn’t the typical woman to be trafficked since she came from a nice, middleclass home with both parents. So how could she have fallen prey to the sex trade? According to Annie, her family knew she was in Las Vegas but had no idea she was being trafficked for years. Annie shared her insecurities and naivety. “I believe it stemmed from deep-rooted feelings of rejection, lack of identity, and my strong desire to be loved. I was a sucker for love.” Hence, the perfect scenario of misguided teenage emotions, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and lurking pimps who lured young women with enticements of an extravagant lifestyle as they imprison their minds and bodies. Annie shares openly about her life as a trafficked woman calling it “modern-day slavery.” She explains, “traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims then force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation.” In her book, Fallen Out of the Sex Industry and Into the Arms of the Savior, Annie chronicles her life and the horror stories of others who disappeared or died trying to break free from their sexual perpetrators. Thankfully, Annie saw a future with purpose for herself. Devising a secret plan, she made a successful escape for a normal life again. Annie returned to her early Christian roots. Her faith sustains her and life has flourished in the last

10 years. A silver lining came into her life when she met and married a talented “rock” guitar player and founding member of the famous 1980’s band, Stryper, Oz Fox. Oz and Annie have been together since 2007 and she finally has peace because of her strong faith. Annie is committed to helping save other women who are victimized by their pimps. She began “Hookers for Jesus,” a charity to serve these victims and opened Destiny House, a no cost - a year-long residential program to serve and support women. Destiny House provides a safe

haven and time to recover from the extreme sexual and physical abuse these young women experienced at the hands of pimps and johns that controlled and exploited them. There is hope for women who are in the grips of this vile epidemic. Annie is dedicated to this mission trying to save one young life at a time by providing awareness and solutions. ne of the hardest challenges of being mom is juggling my time between the human babies and the fur babies. Our son is a year and a half and we have baby number two on the way, and it’s becoming harder by the day to make sure everyone in the house gets what they need – especially the dogs. I often feel guilty because I can’t spend as much time with them as I used to and I really hate when we have to leave them at home alone. That is why making the most of the time we do have together is so important.

We try to take the dogs on a daily trip to the dog park that triples as free play for the dogs, play time for the toddler, and exercise for Mommy. Now that our son is old enough to interact with the dogs, we try to incorporate them in some of the daily house activities. The most important time of the day for the dogs is in the evenings after the baby has gone to bed. It’s the one time of the day I can devote just to them and I always make sure to let them know how much we love them! MV

These steps are important to do at least a few hours or a day before applying a tanning agent. Shaving: Shave unwanted hair (which also clears dead skin) at least an hour before applying a tanning cream. Use a hydrating agent like Aveeno Therapeutic Shave gel (with soothing oatmeal) to help prevent razor bumps. Tend Skin can also be applied post shaving to treat any stubborn follicles. These steps clear the way for an impeccable smooth surface.

Prep-application Prep: Make sure skin is dry. Apply light (non-oil-based) moisturizer like Cerave Cream to eyebrows, nostrils, knees, and ankles, and Vaseline on nails to avoid caking. Have gloves, an applicator brush, and tissues/baby wipes on hand. These tools will help prevent over-bronzing, give access to hard-to-reach areas, and cover excess removal.

Application: Start application, bottom to top, using circular motions all over, and thinner layers on feet, ankles, knees, hands, and face. Wipe excess from wrists, hands, elbows, knees, and tops of feet. Baby or make-up remover wipes are great for the palms or a body scrub. Leave tanner on 6-8 hours without showering or sweating, but best if overnight.

re you ready for spring? It’s time to start thinking about transitioning your skincare routine from winter to spring. Every time a season changes you should address not only your wardrobe but the differences in your skin as well. You can optimize your best looking skin just by making a few adjustments:

Give Back with Lakeside Yin Yoga

he Spa at Lakeside 2.0 is known for always giving back to the community by sponsoring Triathlons, other running events and many charities in Las Vegas. Rick Spradling, owner of The Spa at Lakeside 2.0, is keeping alive the great energy and dream that his mother started in 2000 with The Spa at Lakeside, with his version of the Spa. The Spa at Lakeside 2.0 is located in the Lakeside Center within Desert Shores on a man made named Lake Jacqueline. The views on the lakeside spa terrace and lakeside weddings grounds are truly breathtaking and magical. Rick had a vision to help the community, spa clients, runners, and triathletes with Yin Yoga. He contacted the owners of the Lakeside Center to see if they would donate the lakeside area for his yoga, and they agreed. With the green light to start donation-based Lakeside Yin Yoga, he hired Audrey Tarris to lead the yoga on the lake. The Lakeside Yin Yoga started in September of 2016 with all the money donated in honor and memory of his late mother, Paula Spradling’s, battle with breast cancer. All money collected from the attending yogis for September and October was donated to Breast Cancer Awareness. With a passion to help people get back on better

paths for their lives he wanted to help out and donate to The Shannon West Youth Homeless Center. After hearing about a hardship his guitar teacher had with the school he worked at going out of business, Rick had another amazing idea to have live guitar music with the lakeside Yin Yoga. He takes care of the cost of both the instructor and the live music, and all proceeds go to The Shannon West Homeless Center. Yin Yoga is every Monday and Thursday at 6:30pm and lasts until 7:45pm. It is a quiet and slow-paced meditative practice with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. The long held asanas (postures) work deep with your connective tissues of the body the tendons, fascia, and ligaments. Yin aims at cultivating awareness of inner silence. It is a perfect compliment to balance and yang lifestyle or exercise programs, such as running and biking. The Yin Yoga instructor Audrey has a long history of studying and teaching body movement, with discovering martial arts in 1994 and yoga in 1999. She studied at Moksha Yoga Center, in the heart of Chicago (2007-2009). She

looks forward to providing a space of authentic compassion wherein her students will grow and learn along with her as their yoga journeys unfold. They have many different levels and ages that attend the lakeside yin yoga. The instructor will modify some of the postures to accommodate past injuries and immobility for some of the participants. One of the yogis that attended every class since the start, Vee, had this to say about her experience of Lakeside Yin Yoga: “I had always believed that my body was inflexible, and stretching is something I’d never done before. I discovered yoga at The Spa at Lakeside 2.0 after Rick mentioned it at the Jus Run running group at his spa. Rick is so gracious in that he donates all the money to charity. I’m very active with hiking biking, running and playing golf, Lakeside Yin Yoga at the spa is my ME time and also helps me recover from all my sports. Since I started practicing I have noticed many great benefits of yoga for my mind and body, I sleep better, stress levels are down, and I move and run better. Sometimes I will get a flood of emotions during class and this is the best way for me release and let go. Five Fertility Myths Everyone Hears

Myth #2: It’s easier to get pregnant the second time around. While having a child does indicate that a person was fertile at one point in his or her life, it doesn’t guarantee that he or she will be fertile in subsequent attempts to conceive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 11 percent of couples who already have a child experience secondary infertility. Secondary infertility is caused by many of the same problems that lead to primary infertility. Age also plays a role, particularly if the couple was a lot younger when they had their first child.

ike it or not, your girlfriends, sisters and co-workers, who are already moms, have a lot of opinions on childbirth and parenting; and they are likely to share them with you every chance they get—even before you get pregnant! How should you respond to their well-intended suggestions when it comes to boosting your chances of starting, and growing, your family? Well, if it’s your grandmother doling out the advice, you might choose to simply smile and say “thank you”. For everyone else’s sake, here are some facts to help you sort out the real from the rumors about infertility.

Myth #3: I was overweight and I got pregnant the numbers on the scale don’t matter. Experts agree that being too thin or too heavy can impact your chances of conceiving. Women who don’t consume enough calories every day, risk not being able to ovulate normally and become pregnant. Conversely, being overweight can also have negative consequences on a couple’s ability to conceive, since obesity can interfere with hormones and ovulation. Several studies have also linked obesity in men to a low sperm count. #Myth 4: Be patient; it just takes time. Infertility is a medical condition that can be treated. Approximately 50 percent, or more,

of couples who seek an infertility evaluation will respond to treatments and will achieve a successful pregnancy. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a couple should seek the care of an infertility specialist if the woman is under age 35 and is unable to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected intercourse or, if the woman is age 35 or older and is unable to achieve pregnancy after 6 months of unprotected intercourse. Myth #5: When it comes to getting pregnant, 40 is the new 30. While many women today are healthier and taking better care of themselves, when compared to the women of their mom’s generation, it’s important to note that even though a woman may look closer to age 30, her eggs are still age 40! A woman loses 90 percent of her eggs by age 30, and 97% are depleted by age 40. Looking at other people’s transformation pictures and watching their journeys can really inspire you to do it yourself. Keep looking at their pages daily, keeping the motivation in front of you. It totally works! Try Casein protein shakes instead of Whey protein shakes if you tend to go for long periods of time without eating, like during a work day full of meetings or before bed time. Casein is a slowdigesting protein that can take up to 6 hours to digest and, therefore, keeps you feeling full longer. Set a diet goal of 12 weeks and stick to it. It’s easier to stick to a strict diet for a shorter period of time, than to keep cheating on your diet and dragging the process out. Not only will your body respond to it in a positive way, but you won’t have to feel like you are dieting your entire life. Have an open mind when it comes to eating foods that you associate with the word, “diet”. This is 2017, and we have come a long way. Healing Addiction at the Holistic House

ustin Hoffman started using heroin in 1996, beginning a 20-year opiate addiction. Throughout these years, he went to multiple rehab facilities but couldn’t stay clean. After being labelled hopeless by a mental hospital, Justin became addicted to methadone for 6 years, until his career as a DJ led him to meet DJ AM. AM quickly decided to become Justin’s AA sponsor, and paid for his rehab. Justin worked hard to abstain from drug use for 5 years, until DJ AM’s sudden passing initiated a serious relapse. He sought help and worked to stay clean, but an emergency gallbladder surgery caused another relapse. No matter how many prescription pills he took or AA meetings he attended, nothing worked… until he saw an HBO Documentary about a plant medicine in Mexico called Ibogaine, which repairs the brain to a preaddicted state so addicts don’t crave their drug of choice anymore. Intrigued and desperate, Justin decided to check it out and 3 weeks later and he went to Mexico to try it. Although intense, as soon as the treatment was over, Justin knew he was free of addiction. Justin says during the experience he heard an audible voice saying that his new purpose in life would be saving people, requiring that he give up DJing. This was confirmed when he returned home and began receiving messages from addicts who needed help. He then started researching how to start his own sober living program here in Las Vegas.

Following the Ibogaine treatment, Justin didn’t relapse (and hasn’t touched harmful drugs or prescriptions since). He returned to an AA meeting and felt out of place. He didn’t associate with powerlessness or the idea that we’re diseased and won’t recover. As he left that meeting, he got another call from an individual asking him to start his own program. He started doing yoga and learning about holistic medicines. During this time, he met his now girlfriend, Tishara, whose knowledge and holistic healing background caused Justin to partner with her to start Holistic House, the first luxury, boutiquestyle sober living home of its kind! The program begins with a trip to Mexico for an Ibogaine treatment. After returning to Las Vegas, clients are hit hard with herbal treatments and saunas for the first week. Other holistic methods used throughout the program are floatation tanks, cryotherapy, and one of the most effective tools: physical activity. Clients are introduced to a variety of sports and exercises including hot yoga, boot camp, hiking, qigong, and boxing. “Every client is different” says Justin. “The key is to find what you enjoy doing, and do that consistently. I don’t bring people to meetings, because it’s depressing.” He continues, “AA doesn’t work because it doesn’t treat the mind, body and soul. Addiction is a behavior that stems from trauma, so why are we treating it with guilt and shame?” Holistic House also provides lectures from nutritionists, meetings with therapists, Amazonian hape’ ceremonies, Kambo frog medicine, organic food,

a pantry full of organically harvested holistic medicines, and more. The program is a minimum of 30 days, but clients are welcome to stay longer if necessary. Justin and Tishara have seen a 100% success rate with clients who’ve stayed for 60 days. They only seen 3 relapses in 20 months and have helped nearly 80 people. With Holistic House’s popularity on the rise, their vetting process is extensive. Unlike most sober living houses, Holistic House only hosts 5 residents at one time for the comfort and privacy of the clients. They don’t accept individuals with a history of violence, personality disorders or chronic health issues. “Anyone who is ready to be done with addiction can be. If you’re willing to show up and do the work, you will succeed” Justin says. Holistic House is all about healing deep-rooted problems instead of suppressing them with prescription pills. Justin says that the life-change they’ve seen wouldn’t be possible without his partner, and although this is some of the hardest work he’s ever done, Justin Hoffman is committed to providing holistic treatments and proper aftercare for the rest of his life. *All treatments are administered by licensed professionals; Ibogaine is administered legally in both Mexico and Canada. You have a very interesting background, some may say you’re the definition of an American Dream success story. Can you tell us a little bit about your history?

When I was a baby I was left in a basket at a church in Seoul, South Korea. I was found by a priest and spent a year in an orphanage. Fortunately I was adopted by an American family and was relocated to Avon, MA, a tiny suburb South of Boston. I left for college when I was 17 and decided on Florida State University, the number one party school at the time, talk about foreshadowing! In 2003 I started my first entertainment company in Miami which led to throwing events. I later relocated to Las Vegas in 2006 and FNOM Worldwide was born.

Your event company FNOM Worldwide throws some incredible parties. What’s the secret?

FNOM is a full service event and logistics company, we are truly a one-stop shop. We make the event process convenient, and there’s a lot less margin of error when everything is streamlined through FNOM rather than having to deal with several individual vendors. I also believe that a major key to our success is the lost art of under promising and over delivering. We go out of our way to make our client’s vision a reality, and would even prefer to take a loss on an event rather than make a profit by skimping.

What kind of events do you throw?

The real question is what kind of events don’t we throw? We do everything from massive Super Bowl parties with thousands of attendees to much more intimate functions like 40th birthday parties. We manage everything from event production to securing talent and decor. We know how to create a party, and we do it well because love what we do!

What is the typical client response after one of your events?

Usually clients are blown away after one of our events because we manage to stay within budget, but we always throw in unexpected added value. I know it only takes one event with a new client to gain their trust, and from there it blossoms into a long-term partnership. Every day I am grateful to be able to work with major international brands like Red Bull, Corona and Voss Water, which were all referrals.

irl power is in the air and Miss Nevada Jr. High America, Alexandra Kouretas, is leading the charge to success amongst young girls in her community. As an 11-yearold 5th grade student at The Meadows School, Alexandra visits local schools to promote her pageant’s national anti-bullying platform, B.R.A.V.E., Building Respect and Values for Everyone. She and her pageant sisters speak to students of all ages at assemblies and in classrooms about recognizing bullying and how to end it. By sharing their own experiences and empowering students to take the anti-bullying pledge, they are making an impact on young lives everywhere. No stranger to obstacles, as a dyslexic student, this warrior princess and avid singer has been on a mission to promote reading awareness with her “Rock and Read” campaign. Combining the B.R.A.V.E. platform, her struggles with dyslexia and her passion for singing, Alexandra loves to inspire and connect with other students to pursue their dreams and never let anything hold them back. Her motto, “If I can do it, you can too and together we can make a difference in ourselves and others” is part of her “Lead by ALEXample” way of life. After winning the national title of Little Miss United States 2015 in Washington D.C., she began singing the National Anthem at numerous charity events and has now sung for thousands of people, opening for Kelli Pickler at her concert honoring our nation’s Veterans, the kick-off of the NBA Summer League basketball tournament, a UNLV basketball game, Marine Corps Toys for Tots Celebrity Benefit and Show at the Orleans, and the official Las Vegas debate viewing party during the 2016 election, to name a few. Her mom says, “She is constantly singing, even in her sleep!” Last year this busy young lady was asked to head the Junior Committee for the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum Royal Tea where she spread awareness through social media, collected auction items, raised funds and performed during the tea. She has also hosted events for Project Teddy, collecting Kindles for children with cancer to help them during chemotherapy, and

collected and wrapped toys at her gift wrapping event for the Just One Project. When Alexandra isn’t busy with school, philanthropy and singing, she competes on a hiphop dance team and loves volleyball, watching hockey, shopping with her friends and traveling with her family. She will be heading to Little

Rock, Arkansas in June to compete for the national title of Miss Jr. High America with scholarships and prizes valued at over $50,000. Having been an executive in Concierge for many years from Bellagio, Venetian, Palazzo to The Cosmopolitan, I experienced firsthand the need to provide a service that dedicated itself entirely to tourists needing medical assistance during their stays. I simply married my world-class concierge experience and medical to create a 24-hour service which literally resurrected the art of housecall medicine to the Las Vegas Strip. We are the first house-call medical group that is solely dedicated to Las Vegas by delivering a board-certified physician to the privacy and luxury of a client’s suite, or by rescuing a client who simply needs a refill on a prescription by delivering prescriptions 24/7. Q: Jennifer, what is your background? A: I had a very fun and truly extraordinary career in the entertainment industry as a headline singer, model, Television Host and corporate spokesperson for 25 years. I traveled the world and got to experience so much of life!

Why did you start Las Vegas Keynote Speakers?

A: In 2008 I met my husband, Dan Lier, who happens to be the number one motivational speaker in Las Vegas! I was able to learn so much about this thriving industry of being a Keynote Speaker, and I realized it was so close to my industry of entertainment in the way that speakers have to market themselves. Because I was often hired for corporate entertainment, I really understood his business and quickly figured out who was hiring what speaker and why.

Q: It is said that you were hired by the Polaroid Museum here in Las Vegas to build their corporate events business. Is that true?

A: Yes I was! It was an incredible experience. We were very successful and we grew at a rapid pace. In that position, I learned the in’s and out’s of organizing a corporate event, plus my network of people and knowledge of the corporate events industry expanded exponentially. I didn’t know it at that time but I had all the components to build a very successful speakers bureau!

Do your speakers acknowledge that you understand their end of things?

A: The most common compliment I receive is that it’s so easy to work with me and the speakers feel very taken care of. All of this is because I’ve been in their shoes! Plus, I really wanted to create a true concierge service for both the client and the speaker where they both feel ultra taken care of, and that’s what I have done.

What kind of speakers do you book for meetings and events?

A: We book speakers of all kinds! Some of our most popular speakers are Dan Lier for Sales, Spencer Horn for Leadership, Scott McKain for Creating Distinction and Customer Service, and Judi Moreo for Creativity and Culture. rt of Attunement is uniquely significant because there’s nothing out there like this one-woman operation, whose mission is to “help people find a more enjoyable experience of life.” I met Owner and Brainwave Technologist, Angi Covington, a few years ago when we discussed the nuances of marketing her very unique ‘brain’ business. We became friends and she ended up advertising in MYVEGAS Magazine in 2014 (I might note that her appearance in MyVegas Magazine landed her a very well-known client, the nation’s #1 life & business strategist, Tony Robbins). Now, even though we’ve been friends for a few years, I still did not understand what Angi really did for a living. So, I never thought I had a need for her brain technology until I went through some new challenges last year. I’m not even sure how it came up but she suggested (again) that I come in for a series of sessions, saying it might help me to improve my focus and “integrate the effects of trauma from my brain’s perspective.”

I wondered if all the changes I’d made had affected my brain’s functioning and thought process. So I decided heck, I could always use more focus as I continue to pursue my life goals, so this time I agreed to come see her. Not knowing what to expect, I followed the recommended protocol: participate in seven, two-hour sessions within seven days, drink plenty of water, and maintain a healthy diet with protein and no alcohol. The sessions were pretty relaxing. I sat in a zerogravity recliner with wires on my head, while

listening to musical tones that were replicating my brain’s activity. Most of the time, I was lying back with my eyes closed, and other times I would sit up and read Angi’s book overviewing ancient and modern-day teachings on the thing we all want: “Happiness” (it’s a really, really good book I might add!). Since the sessions, I have a greater clarity that is hard to define. However, I can clearly see some of the patterns I’ve been repeating in my life and am able to easily let them go. I also notice a calm feeling that wasn’t there before. In addition, since then, everything has changed, and all for the better! I’ve been able to remove myself from toxic relationships and have attracted some very new and exciting people in my life. My business has soared, I am totally focused on my business,

my health and my music! Life is now exactly where I want it to be!! Angi has expressed to me that the technology has helped people who have issues with sleep, anxiety, focus, overthinking, fear, clarity, pain, weight loss, and even relationships. She says meditation also balances the brain, but inconsistency of practice prevents many people from seeing all the benefits that come from balanced and harmonized brain activity. “You get the benefits you’d see after years of meditation in just one week.” I’m sure it’s more complicated than that but that’s all I needed to know. The Just One Project Las Vegas’s Favorite Way to Give Back

our Ford F-150s pickup trucks caravan down Flamingo Avenue on their way to the meeting point at Sam’s Town on Boulder Highway. Each truck, loaded to the brim, is transporting its share of over 100 boxes of fresh cut pineapple, mango, melon, and berries. At the meeting point, the drivers of these trucks converge with volunteers who have made time on this crisp January morning to do something extraordinary in their community. Instructions and locations are provided and the caravan, now several cars longer, heads to the first delivery location. For the next several hours, twenty volunteers will hand out almost nine thousand lbs. of fruit to a community in need. The event, the first ever Just One Project Pop Up and Give Mobile Food Bank, is a success complete with smiles, tearful gratitude, and many hugs. The Pop Up and Give Mobile Food Bank is one of two brand new monthly projects that local non-profit organization, The Just One Project, has added in 2017. This project provides fresh food to Valley communities. The second project addition, The Smile Project, entertains children staying in Valley hospitals by conducting monthly character visits.

implementing hands-on volunteer opportunities that allow project donors and volunteers to interact face to face with the people they are serving. When The Just One Project was founded in July of 2014, the goal was simple: show others that kind acts, no matter how small, can make lasting impacts on the lives of others. The organization identified needs within the community and designed volunteer opportunities to meet those needs. The organization also worked to normalize experiences for children living in poverty. One example of this is the annual “Dream” Shoe Drive which provides children with back-to-school shoes based on their individual brand preferences. Another is the annual Santa’s Workshop event where families in need of holiday assistance are invited to a large Christmas party. Here, they pick up Christmas trees and trimmings. Each child visits with Santa and provides him with a list of wishes. The organization then works to get each wish sponsored. The size of this event has tripled since its inception in 2014, and served over 150 children in 2016. Since, 2014, The Just One Project’s volunteer base has grown and so have the projects. Each project requires a project planning committee that can be joined by anyone looking to get involved in a leadership role. Believing that volunteerism knows no

age limit, The Just One Junior Board of Directors has been added in 2017. This group of twelve local students, ranging in age from thirteen to seventeen, will soon be implementing their own service projects. All projects conducted by The Just One Project and The Just One Juniors are open to volunteers of all ages, and the organization is happy to sign off on required volunteer hours. Every life touched by The Just One Project has been made possible by the generous support of individuals and corporate sponsorships. Pet Rescue Making a Pawsitive Difference in our Community

“Dogs are amazing animals who never get the credit they deserve. My relationship with dogs has been a huge part of my life. They have always been my best friends and companions. My job is to rescue and ensure that all the pups are taken care of. It’s unfortunate that there are so many dogs to be rescued every day. Our rescue solely survives from donations and our volunteers’ time. We would never be able to do any of this without our awesome volunteers.“

“I have been a private dog trainer conducting group classes at UNLV for over 20 years. I have been on-call with Pawsitive Difference since its inception to provide resolutions to behavioral problems and assistance with the transition of the dogs into loving homes. The objective is to help families (foster or adoptive) maintain a secure environment for the dogs and eliminate the resubmission of the dog back into the process.”

“I have laughed and cried many of times with people we have never met, and created friendships through the dogs in need. Once Pawsitive rescues a dog, they are always welcome back if the new owner cannot care for them anymore.

“While the canine is being fostered, I will assist to resolve issues such as house training, barking, separation anxiety, or the like. Initially, Annette and I determine the best type of home for a dog based on any unresolved problems. Then, I reach out to the foster family to meet individual training needs for each dog.”

“I can see the sigh of relief in almost every pup rescued. I think they really do know they are being brought to safety. Next is the trip to the vet - this is where all of our donation money goes - then to the foster homes where the pups are prepared and learn to trust and be loved again. We can only save as many pups as time, money and foster volunteers allow us to. AllPro Painters: Meet Maria Donofrio

aria Donofrio is the manager of AllPro Painters, a leading Residential and Commercial Painting Contractor serving Las Vegas, Southern Utah, and hotels across the country. Maria was born and raised in Las Vegas and has worked in management in the banking and medical fields. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration with a minor in Business Administration, and an Associate’s Degree in Communications. She saw a need for her organization and management skills in the family painting and drywall business and jumped in to help as her studies were completing. “I loved the idea of helping so many people in the medical field, but I’ve found that helping clients and coworkers in the painting business is just as fulfilling,” says Maria.

Maria started with AllPro as an estimator, meeting with customers and walking them through the entire job, from picking colors down to the very last touchup. “It is such an amazing feeling when a customer walks through the door of their newly painted home and their face lights up like a kid on Christmas morning,” Maria says. She immediately clicked with the AllPro culture because it mirrors her own values: family, honesty, professionalism, and true value for customers. She is currently focusing on expanding the company into other states as an owner/operator and licensing her company as a painting contractor in those states. Her passion, however, will always be the one-on-one experience of helping customers transform their homes.

“Maria brings a caring, go-getter kind of attitude her customers really appreciate. She goes out of her way to make sure customers receive the kind of painting experience that will make AllPro Painters their painting contractor of choice for the long term. As part of the management team, her insight and proactive nature is invaluable. She just sees a need or problem and takes care of it, something you don’t find in the typical employee,” says Nathan Dunn, Owner of AllPro Painters.

Interesting Facts about Maria: • She would be a professional Country line dancer, if there were such a thing. • Her coolest painting project was a specialty paint job at the Neon Museum’s Boneyard. • Her craziest painting project was lime green kitchen cabinets to match a Caribbeanthemed house. • She encountered her most difficult customer when she had just started estimating. He was a crusty old Chicago

cop who seemed bent on finding fault with her. Some types of people you just can’t make happy and put out way too much negative energy - if it can go wrong it will. She has since learned to avoid those types of people. Her most memorable moment was when she and her team painted the home of an 85-year-old wife whose husband’s military career kept them moving from base to base or in rental properties with plain white walls their entire married life. They had just moved into Sun City Anthem. When the woman saw her newly painted home, she began crying as she drove her scooter through the different rooms. She passed away a few days after seeing her dream of color walls and accents fulfilled.

recently saw the movie Hidden Figures and left the theatre greatly inspired, and yet confused. The movie features three black women working at NASA who make a remarkable difference for themselves, for all black women, and for the entire space program. So how is it that I have never heard of them or their personal achievements? Timing may be the answer.

There were dozens of African American women working behind the scenes as “human computers” and their work was vital to the space race. When NASA launched the first astronaut into orbit they relied on the mathematical genius of Katherine Johnson who figured the correct coordinates for a successful landing of the shuttle. John Glenn personally relied on her abilities to bring him home safely. How inspiring! The magnificence of this story is not just how mathematically brilliant these women were, but that they found a way to exercise their brilliance during a time of extreme racism in the 1950’s within an all-male, all-white culture. They truly made a significant difference for all women, and today they made a difference for me. Their story has inspired me to want to be an inspiration to others so I can leave a legacy too. What can I do today that will be relevant 50 years from now? The people who brought the movie Hidden Figures to life have certainly left a legacy because sharing this story and inspiring others will make positive changes somewhere, and any positive change will be felt in years to come. They say timing is everything so maybe saving this amazing story until now is just what 2017 needs – a boost of inspiration. MV

xecutive Chef Rick Giffen brings 26 years of hotel restaurant culinary experience to his management role at the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower. Over the course of his highly successful career, he has opened more than 40 restaurants worldwide, trained at the Hotel Intercontinental San Diego while going to culinary school, and opened the U.S. Grant Hotel as saucier for Grant Grill, which was reviewed in several culinary magazines including Food & Wine Magazine. Running five restaurants and the banquet center in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, he was the youngest executive chef in the Sheraton Hotel chain. Chef Giffen served as Western Regional Corporate Chef for Planet Hollywood, and was also the Culinary Training Director, overseeing daily operations of the 14 properties west of the Rockies, as well as Marvel Mania and the Official All Star Cafe. Giffen also served as Executive Chef of the Maxim Hotel, and as Regional Corporate Chef for China

Method: Mix all ingredients well until a slurry is formed and then pack evenly across the top of the Prime-Rib to form a crust. Place salt side up in a roasting Pan on top of *Mirepoix Mixture and 4 cups of water. Place in oven at 325 degrees for approx. 1.75 hours or until the internal temp of 105 then lift off salt cap and retain for seasoning blend*. Place prime rib back in oven to crispen the cap and heat to 120 degrees internal temp then let rest a half hour before carving. Drain all Mirepoix into a sauce pot with and simmer with ½ cup red wine to create Au jus by straining through a chinois. *2 cups Rough chopped Onion skin on 1cup Rough Chopped Celery 1cup Rough Chopped Carrot 3ea Bay Leaves 2TBSP Peppercorns 6 sprigs of Fresh Thyme

If you’ve driven past the property lately, you probably have noticed the entire front of the casino is undergoing a completely new look. Other changes like a new buffet are also on the horizon. GIVING BACK IS PART OF OUR DNA We recently concluded our 7th Annual Project Pink effort to donate funds and raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. During “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” we donate a portion of our proceeds and gaming winnings, from a variety of pink-themed offerings throughout our casinos, to Susan G. Komen Nevada and American Cancer Society. We are ecstatic to share that we proudly donated $73,602 this year, and to date, we have donated $434,000 to the fight against breast cancer! MONTH OF HONOR Similar to Project Pink, we will once again dedicate the month of May to our military community. The 3rd annual Month of Honor effort will provide needed funds to help the residents of Veterans Village, a wonderful local charity that cares for of our homeless veteran population. Making the Las Vegas Community My Home

s it just me, or is Las Vegas an exceptionally difficult city to meet people and make friends in? Well, I’ve asked enough people my first year of living in Vegas to know it’s not just me, and I’m not totally crazy (for that reason at least). I’m a fresh transplant from Charlotte, North Carolina now residing in Vegas to co-host the new morning show on KOMP 92.3, BS in the Morning with Brittney and Sparks. My boss who moved me across the country warned me that I would meet with resistance trying to meet people because I’m used to socializing in a nightlife setting, and while Vegas has the best, gaming actually hurts the odds of interacting with people. “Ironic that the city with the best places to socialize in is so anti-social,” a bartender said, while being forced to socialize with me because I was the only one at the bar not playing video poker. I realized in investigating why Vegas is such a unique city in regards to building a community and network of friends was fruitless - it doesn’t matter why, what matters is what we’re going to do about it.

So, here’s what you can do to become an active member of the Las Vegas community: •

First, look at yourself. When I looked in the mirror I saw this issue was also my fault. So I made a conscious effort to get my head out of my phone when I was out and about and saw Vegas in a new light. I started going to everything I was invited to (or I just invited myself to). Sometimes I left wondering why I bothered shaving, other times I left with a stack of business cards, a new number in my phone and someone to go to lunch with the following week. Go to popular local pubs when they have events - karaoke or open mic night, wine mixers and patio parties - anything where you don’t have to compete with Keno.

Go get your hair done. People are forced to socialize at salons and barber shops by default (not to mention you want to be friendly with someone with scissors near your head). Take advantage of this interaction. I got a membership to Look Style Society and while I originally just went to get my hair blown out, now, I go to see my friends.

Find a gym that offers group classes, and go without your headphones. Don’t be afraid to be the person who chats up people at the gym.

•

Join a club. I actually made some of my closest girl friends here by joining a book club. Check out listings in publications such as MYVEGAS Magazine, social media, and meetup.com to find your wheel house.

Find a church or place to congregate with like-minded people. I’ve learned it’s a little harder to find community in a mega church, so I found a new church, Relentless Church, to plant myself in and teach Sunday school.

And perhaps I’m partial because I’m a radio host, but listen to local radio and go to radio station events and concerts. You’ll be surrounded by locals and people with the same musical tastes as you.
